Remote team: team building tips

The pandemic has forever changed the approach to work. What was once a place-based activity is now free from the confines of a workstation. A remote team is now a typical format for most organisations. The presence of employees in different cities or countries does not prevent them from performing their duties effectively.

However, productivity is not the only aspect of working. To work well in a team, it is essential to build interpersonal relationships. And this is precisely what is lacking in a remote format. Even when employees are scattered across countries and continents, it is possible to create and maintain close, friendly communication. The project or department manager should be doing this.

How to build relationships for a remote team

Psychologists have found that a good atmosphere in a team contributes to practical work and increases productivity. This principle also applies to a virtual work environment. However, creating the right conditions for remote interactions requires more effort.

remote team communication

Experts recommend a number of techniques to help managers maintain the company culture:

  1. Virtual coffee breaks. Coffee breaks are the most common form of communication between office workers. This tradition is also applicable to working remotely. You need to schedule a specific time that is convenient for all team members. They will make their coffee and discuss topics unrelated to work online.
  2. Virtual team building. You can also use an online format for team-building activities. For example, you can organise online games or quizzes or watch films together.
  3. Music. Common musical tastes are a great way to build friendly relationships with colleagues. Working to your favourite tunes can also help you concentrate and lift your spirits. A straightforward option is to create a shared playlist for the team, with each member’s preferences. Employees can also share their playlists and exchange new songs.
  4. Holidays and important dates. Remote workplaces are no reason to stop celebrating important events. Birthdays, anniversaries, and colleagues’ personal achievements are great reasons to have fun with employees. In addition, such tokens of attention will demonstrate loyalty on the part of management.
  5. Use video in virtual meetings. In most cases, people use correspondence in professional interactions. However, this does not give a sense of presence, which is extremely important when working remotely. A good solution is to use video calls. The team leader should encourage discussion using Zoom or other video conferencing tools. This allows people to see each other, which improves communication.

Maintaining a good atmosphere in a remote team is challenging but achievable. The result can be a cohesive team that is flexible and communicates effectively.
